What is Gold Vermeil?
Vermeil (pronounced vehr-may) is a legally regulated term that refers to a certain kind of quality jewelry. To be legally called “vermeil”, the jewelry piece must meet ALL of these conditions:
1. Have sterling silver as its base material. Sterling silver is an alloy made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other materials, and is a standard material used in high quality jewelry (versus, e.g., brass or copper).
2. Be plated in gold that is at least 10k (10 karats). That means the gold is at least 41.7% gold content.
3. Have gold plating that is at least 2.5 microns thick. A micron is 1/1000th of a millimeter.
Gold Vermeil is more durable and longer-lasting than gold-plated jewelry.
Gold plated has a minimum thickness of 0.5 microns, whilst Gold Vermeil has to be a thickness of at least 2.5 microns.
What’s the difference between 14k and 18k Gold Vermeil?
14k Gold
- Composition: 58.3% gold, 41.7% alloy.
- Color: Warm yellow, brighter than 10k but less vibrant than 24k.
- Durability: More durable and resistant to scratching and bending.
- Affordability: More affordable than higher karat gold, ideal for everyday wear.
18k Gold
- Composition: 75% gold, 25% alloy.
- Color: Rich, intense yellow, closer to pure gold.
- Luxurious Appeal: Preferred for high-end and special occasion jewelry.
- Softness: Softer and more susceptible to scratches and bending.
- Allergy-Friendly: Less likely to cause skin allergies.
Comparison
- Durability: 14k is more durable.
- Color: 18k offers a richer color.
- Affordability: 14k is more budget-friendly.
- Use: 14k is great for everyday wear; 18k is perfect for luxury pieces.
What is Sterling Silver?
925 Sterling Silver is a lightweight metal made of 92.5% pure silver. It’s highly durable and designed for everyday wear.
Water generally does not damage sterling silver. *But* water does cause silver to oxidize (darken) more quickly, and what type of water and the chemicals in it has an impact on how much it will cause your silver change color.
Shower water is generally fine but avoid pool water, salted water or any type of water that contain harsh chemicals.
What is Brass Jewelry?
Brass jewelry is made from an alloy that typically consists of about 60-70% copper and 30-40% zinc. This combination results in a metal that boasts a warm, yellow-gold color, making it a popular alternative to gold jewelry due to its affordability and aesthetic appeal.
KEY CHARACTERISTICS:
- Durability: Brass is a sturdy and resilient metal, which makes it ideal for creating long-lasting jewelry pieces.
- Malleability: This metal is highly malleable, allowing artisans to craft intricate and detailed designs with ease.
- Antique Look: Over time, brass develops a natural patina, giving it a unique vintage appearance that many find desirable.
- Versatility: Brass can be polished to a bright, shiny finish or left to develop a matte, rustic look.
BENEFITS OF BRASS JEWELLERY:
- Affordable: Compared to precious metals like gold and silver, brass offers a cost-effective option without sacrificing beauty.
- Hypoallergenic Options: Many brass pieces are coated or treated to be hypoallergenic, making them suitable for those with sensitive skin.
- Sustainable: Brass is often made from recycled materials, contributing to environmentally friendly and sustainable practices in jewelry making.
What is Enamel?
Enameling is a technique in which a glossy substance, traditionally a type of glass, is applied to the surface of metal or another hard surface. Traditional enamel is glass-based; however, we use cold enamel—also known as epoxy resin enamel—which does not contain glass. This type is far more durable and resistant to chipping that may sometimes occur with daily wear.
What gemstone do you use?
All of our moissanite and cubic gemstones are premium quality, carefully selected for their exceptional brilliance, clarity, and durability.
Jewellery Care
How to Wear & Clean
Stainless Steel Jewellery
Our stainless steel pieces are 100% waterproof, tarnish-resistant, and hypoallergenic, making them perfect for everyday wear — even in the shower, ocean or gym. Built to last, they won’t fade or turn your skin green, no matter how often you wear them. Just wear, glow, and go.
Gold Vermeil & Sterling Silver Jewellery
The more intentional you are about caring for your jewellery, the longer it will last. You can follow these simple steps to help your vermeil and sterling silver pieces stay beautiful:
- As a general care tip, your jewellery should be the last thing you put on before going out and the first thing you remove when you get home.
- We recommend cleaning your vermeil jewellery with our microfibre cloth after each wear and before storing it.
- Remove your jewellery before doing any activity that risks physical damage.
- Remove your jewellery before showering, swimming, or exercising — or ensure it's completely dry if it comes into contact with moisture.
- Allow perfume, lotions, and creams to fully absorb into the skin before putting on your jewellery.
By treating your jewellery with care, you’ll keep it looking its best for years to come.
How to Store
-When not being worn, store in a safe, dry place to protect against the elements of daily exposure.
-Store pieces separately to avoid damage.
-Ensure pieces are completely dry before storing.
-Certain metals, like vermeil and sterling silver, can be prone to tarnishing. We recommend storing your jewellery in our jewellery pouch and box with the provided antitarnishing black sheet. It will protect the metals from tarnishing by absorbing sulphides and other pollutants in the air cause tarnishing to occur.
